Half A Million, Royal Wedding, Upcoming Gigs n stuff...

So the big news is that our "Bring Me Sunshine" video is now over half a million views and still climbing. At this rate we'll probably be at over a million three weeks so please keep spreading the sunshine. We have had so much great feedback and people are thanking us for brightening up their day. Not only that but just look at the weather, at least in the UK, it's like August in May and it all started when we released the video. The power of SUNSHINE! Please keep passing on the link to your friends. http://is.gd/sunshine. The single will be released on May 2nd and I'll send out the iTunes link as soon as it's available.

Next weekend we have the Royal Wedding to celebrate. We'll be at the Derry Jazz Festival but you can still celebrate with us by getting our version of "Get Me To The Church On Time" recorded especially for the occasion. Click on the link below to open the iTunes Store.

Just did a great show at the Thameside Theatre in Grays, Essex (Ken's home town!) with the fab Rebecca Grant doing a lot of Louis and Keely material. Next up this weekend is tomorrow night (Saturday16th) at the Boogaloo Weekender (which is sold out) on Hayling Island via Portsmouth for a quick "Say No To Drugs" event at Gunwharf Quays. Then on Sunday (17th) it's our first gig at Pizza Express at the Pheasantry on the King's Road, London. All details are on our gig guide. Oh, and I just found out via Twitter that next Friday's gig at Trading Boundaries in Sussex is SOLD OUT too but there's a few standing places left.

Sooooo, what's the big "Bring Me Sunshine" music video news??? Well I'll tell you! Our views have now past the 1/3 of a million mark and are at 335,097. It is not the 15th most viewed video in the music category in the UK this month AND the 113th most viewed video in all categories in the UK this month on the YouTube charts. The Jive Aces YouTube Channel is also the 11th most viewed music channel in the UK this month! That's pretty gorram AWESOME if you ask me!

Now the #1 spot has only 625k views in a month and I think we could beat that and really get the sunshine out there. Please help us spread it by reposting the link to FaceBook, Twitter or emailing it to friends to bring smiles all around. Even if you've posted it once, chances are that not all your friends would have caught it on the news stream. There's no limit to the sunshine!

Goodnight and see you all tomorrow for more sunshine! (I used the word sunshine a lot in this blog post, didn't I? Oh there's another one!)

Alex - Jive Aces

P.S. the single will be out on May 2nd, watch this space!

It's Friday night and we've just finished the latest Jazz Meets Jive show in Bedworth. Tomorrow we're off to Leeds in the afternoon to play at an event for the "Truth About Drugs" campaign and then in the evening we'll be back at the Ritz Ballroom in Brighouse, Yorkshire, one of the very few remaining sprung dance floor ballrooms left int he country. Sunday see us return to Walmer Bridge Village Hall with Farmer Tom and his meat pies (included in the ticket price of course, what a bargain!).

The "Bring Me Sunshine" is now over 211k views in three weeks which is astounding! It's also the 35th most watched video in the music category in the UK this month. Not half bad I'd say!

The single of "Bring Me Sunshine" will be the first release of our new record label "Golden Age Recordings" which we have just set up with Guy Fletcher OBE. Guy is the only British lyricist to have been commissioned to write songs for Elvis.

Here we are with Guy working out the details of "Golden Age Recordings"

Right, to bed and I'll see if I wake to see thousands more people have been hit by sunshine…

Goodnight!

ROYER RIBBONS USED EXTENSIVELY ON NEW JIVE ACES ALBUM

rmaycock March 15th, 2011
jives_vibberts_hi.jpg

Burbank, CA… The Jive Aces are the UK’s top Jive & Swing band. Together for over a decade, this extremely popular six piece group has performed at thousands of festivals, theaters, and events throughout the UK, Europe, and the USA, as well as Japan, Israel, and the Caribbean. During March and the latter part of 2010 (in-between, they toured), the band could be found at LA’s venerable Mad Hatter Studios recording King of the Swingers, their latest album effort on the Golden Age Recordings label. There’s some amazing instrumental performances captured as part of this endeavor and they wouldn’t have happened had it not been for the engineering talents of Brian Vibberts and his collection of Royer Labs ribbon microphones.

Working with a pair each of Royer Labs R-121 and R-122 ribbon microphones as well as the company’s highly acclaimed SF-24V stereo vacuum tube ribbon mic, Vibberts and his second engineers Buck Snow and Ryan Cota have created an impressive recording with a gorgeous sound that captures all the live energy jazz musician Louie Prima had. All tracks on King of the Swingers are written by Louie Prima.

Vibberts was the ideal choice to engineer and co-produce (with producer Vince Hurley) the new Jive Aces album. He’s a multiple Grammy® Award winner, capturing top honors in the Jazz Album of the Year category for his efforts on The New Crystal Silence with Chick Corea and Gary Burton as well as John McLaughlin’s and Chick Corea’s Five Peace Band. Perhaps even more notable is his work on Michael Jackson’s History.

Vibberts discussed his reason for using Royer ribbons, “I’ve always been a fan of ribbon mics, and so I frequently used several of the old RCA ribbon mics in the past. When I first learned of Royer Labs’ ribbon mics, I was very interested, especially because of the active electronics used in their models. When I tried the Royers, I immediately heard the warmth and the realistic sound the mics captured. I was also very impressed with their extremely low noise floor.”

“We used the R-121 and R-122 on the saxophone, trombone, and trumpet,” he continued. “For us, ribbon microphones are a necessity when recording brass instruments, and Royers deliver top notch sound quality. They truly capture the full body and warmth of brass instruments, but have the presence and clarity to convey the energy and excitement which is a major part of The Jive Aces.”

“The Royers were clearly the best mic choice for this project,” Vibberts said. “Part of this is because of the mics’ ability to handle high SPL’s (these horns were loud) and the other part is because of the microphones’ figure 8 polar pattern. By having the trumpet and sax standing side by side, I could use the nulls to isolate the two players from one another—giving me excellent separation.”

“I actually positioned these two players in the room exactly where I wanted them in the mix,” he explained. “By working this way, I could put up the SF-24V for room ambience and have that microphone’s signal reinforce the imaging of the R-121 and R-122. The stereo imaging matched up perfectly and, together, it created a really big sound. I also used the Royers for a lot of Blumlein miking technique on this project (two matched microphones, positioned 90° from each other). The Royers are perfect for this application and, as a result, I captured a really broad stereo image.”

In addition to room ambience, Vibberts’ SF-24V was also used for a not so conventional application, as he discussed. “I used the SF-24V where one capsule was facing the body of the acoustic guitar and the mic’s second capsule was parallel with the instrument’s neck,” he said. “By working this way, I was able to capture the full breadth of the instrument. The sound was so realistic, it was incredible. It was as though the guitarist was positioned directly between the left and right monitors. Just beautiful!”

Vibberts summarized his experience with the Jive Aces project, “We also did some additional recording for some bonus tracks where we recorded a clarinet. I feel as though this is the best clarinet recording I’ve ever heard and, for this, we used a combination of the Royer R-122 and the MA-200 from Royer’s sister company Mojave Audio. It was unreal— absolutely amazing. I’m so proud of that recording; I can’t wait for people to hear it. I’m thrilled with the way the entire album turned out and one principal reason for that sound is the fact that we used the Royer ribbons.”

Here's a little story about recording our new album, "King of the Swingers" a tribute to Louis Prima. It's a bit technical (lots of microphone names) but interesting!

Back Home

So we played Bolton Albert Halls on Saturday night, lovely venue!

Then it was several hours in the van back down South to East Grinstead in time to set up for the L. Ron Hubbard Centenary Charity Concert. This was packed with dancers and non dancers alike and was a great show. Thanks to the very many special guests who took part including Kenny Ball, Motown legend Louvain Demps, Heidi Vogel, Robin Banerjee, Cody "Boogie Boy" Lee, Rebecca Grant, Tony Socci, Dominic Pizinat, Martin Smith and Peter Huszar.

By the way, we aired on channel 4's "4 Thought" series last night too. You can see it online here: http://is.gd/jiveaces4thought

Breakfast

What Alex neglected to mention about the B & B is that as well as being one of the nicest and quietest in England it also does a very nice breakfast. Which is important in a Bed & Breakfast, it being half of the title.
I'm eating a very nice, top quality English breakfast and Al is tucking into scrambled eggs and salmon (because he remembered to order it yesterday).
Anyway, we're not gonna fill up our blog with banal subjects like what we're having for breakfast, not that English breakfast is banal or bland - which is the point, this one isn't at all bland - but many travellers are interested in where to get a good one. Well this is Capernwray House in Hornby and it's jolly nice:-)

Model Railways and Mint Cake

So we are going to attempt to make the Jive Aces "On The Road…" Blog a real "On The Road" Blog. Let us know if there's anything you want to know or would like to hear from us about.

So you may be wondering about that post title! Well the last two nights we played in Hornby (hence the model railway) and Kendal (hence the mint cake). For both shows we were booked by comedian Jim Bowen of Bullseye fame who we worked with at the last two Edinburgh Fringe Festivals (one of which I beat Barry Cryer at the Bullseye darts game at, oh yes!). A beautiful pat of the country and the shows were both great. No model railways or mint cake in site though, how disappointing,

The B&B (it's far too nice to even be called a B&B) is gorgeous too, if you're ever in the Lake District, check it out (www.capernwrayhouse.com).

Right, off to Bolton tomorrow at the Albert Halls and then down to East Grinstead for the charity concert at St Hill Manor in Sussex (Tickets and info HERE).

Don't forget to look out for the Bring Me Sunshine music video coming VERY SOOOON (but you'll get plenty of posts ont hat when it's up!).

Cheers, Alex - JIve Aces
