Hi there, Jazz Meets Jive - 5-Star ReviewThe Jazz Meets Jive show, with Kenny Ball and The Jive Aces together, just got a great, five-star review in the Brighton Argus:
The high-energy band, endlessly moving around in their yellow suits, provided non-stop performances of 1950s music – a case of Bill Haley meets Big Band Swing. Highlights included a boogie-woogie number with the pianist emulating the antics of Jerry Lee Lewis and a sizzling version of “Sing! Sing! Sing!” which provided a glorious end to their set. Topping the bill was jazz legend Kenny Ball – long past bus pass age and still blowing up a storm after more than 50 years of leading a band. He showed no fear in hitting the high notes. Amongst jazz standards including 'That’s A Plenty' and 'Someday You’ll Be Sorry', past hits 'Sukiyaki' and 'Midnight In Moscow' came across with freshness. A swinging drum solo and a thrilling jazz version of Bach’s 'Toccata' proved highly popular, with both bands combining for the finale – a version of The Beatles’ All You Need Is Love.” Next Jazz Meets Jive shows are Bournemouth on the 1st April and Leicester on the 9th April, see gig guide below for full details. Leaving Tinseltown!
So we have spent the past two and a half weeks in Hollywood and the surrounds in the studio recording a forthcoming EP as a tribute to Louis Prima and Keely Smith's music and featuring very special guestsKeely Smith herself (yes, THE Keely Smith!) and Louis and Keely's daughter, Toni Elizabeth. More details about this soon.
We also squeezed some gigs at our fave dance venues including Rusty's for her Wester Birthday Bash (make sure you see the accompanying silent movie on youtube!), Memories, the gorgeous art deco Cicada Club and lastly the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Assoc's opening night at their new venue. We had some guests appear with us including Toni Elizabeth Prima, the recently displaced Kristina Flirtini for the first time without the rest of the gals, Victoria Summer and Marco Palos on sax from Fat Cat Swinger.
Next up is BBC London as soon as we land on Thursday night at 10pm for a round of silliness on the Joanne Good show. 94.9fm or http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/radio.
See you soon!
